  • Over 50% of all counties are news deserts (one or fewer local news sources).
  • More than 2.5 local newspapers close each week.
  • 75% of all news is produced by local newspapers.
  • There are 60%, or 43,000, fewer local newspaper journalists than in 2004.
  • Each newspaper job creates 2.7 other jobs.
  • 70% of national headlines start in local newsrooms.
  • Many local newspapers are family-owned small businesses.

Our Tactics

Candidate Campaign
Contributions (PAC),
Independent Expenditures &
Paid Media,
and Endorsements

Support elected officials that support local newspapers (and possibly support opponents of elected officials that do not support local newspapers).

Public Affairs & Communication

Carry out marketing campaigns with respect to the state of the industry, importance of local news, difference between local news and national media, specific legislation, and more; build cross-industry coalitions and activate local news orgs.

Lobbying

Nurture strong relationships with elected officials and other stakeholders.

Local News Matters

The free press is the only industry mentioned in the U.S. Constitution. Local news, unlike national media, is nonpartisan & has strong bipartisan support. Local newspapers are the most trusted of all media channels and print newspapers provide a permanent, unalterable record

What happens when a community loses its source of local news?

• Increased political polarization.

• Decreased voter turnout and civic engagement.

• Increased votes for fringe candidates.

• Increased misinformation and disinformation.

• Increased unopposed races in government elections.

• Decreased transparency among government and business officials,

leading to higher rates of fraud, waste, and abuse.

• Increased municipal borrowing costs, leading to higher taxes.

• Increased toxic environmental emissions
